In spite of a relatively quiet update week for both Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, we managed to find plenty to discuss this week.

The annual Dragon Festival in Cantha begins next week, bringing with it our annual dose of red bean cakes, sugary blue drinks, and fabulously bad acting.  The newest Guild Wars 2 information brings us an ArenaNet blog entry about new alphabets and prompts a discussion on what this might mean for gameplay.  We continue our endless speculation about the next class reveal, and read lots of reader mail.  Thanks for that, you guys — keep ’em coming!

Also, we try not to, but we still say “mechanic” a lot.

Look for the complete archive from the original GuildCast to be up soon.

The GuildCast theme song is “The Dirt” by Goddessmusic.

Unfortunately none of those work. The list is there, but not the files. That’s what I hope to fix soon, as soon as I can get my hand on all the files! Many listeners have emailed to say that they have them, it’s just a matter of getting them all to me. Soon though! Hopefully 🙂

    Aatxe, from wikipedia: [a.atʃe]

    My attempt at phonetically: Ah’ah.t.sh.ay
the ‘ denotes a complete stop. It’s unclear if there’s a syllable break between t and sh. If I start slurring them together I get a ch sound and I think it’s meant to be softer.

Here’s the full article on it:
Aatxe is an evil spirit in the folk mythology of the Basque people. His name is literally translated as “Young Bull”, and he is sometimes known as Etsai. He is a cave-dwelling spirit who adopts the form of a young red bull, but being a shapeshifter, sometimes takes the shape of a man. At night, more so in stormy weather, he arises from the hollow which is his lair. He attacks criminals and other malevolent people. He also protects people by making them stay home when danger is near.

-After I read this my respect for the Guild Wars team is even greater. I’m such a mythology nerd myself and LOVE learning new things.

It is actually pronounced ah’ah-che (at least that’s what the IPA says). ‘e’ is ‘eh’, not ‘ay’; tʃ (t+sh) is the sound of ‘ch’, this is the way it’s written.

And since this is my first reply here I’d like to thank you guys for the podcast. I’m enjoying it despite being a complete noob when it comes to GuildWars. I play LotRo though so you got bonus points from me 🙂

Looking forward to the next episode.

Wow, I completely butchered that one! 🙂 I always think it’s spelled differently, too… which doesn’t help.

Hey guys great cast. I’m a new listener and so far you guys are pretty amazing! Quick observation, I’m not sure if I’ve just been totally out of the loop (which is most likely since I don’t follow WiK), but the statue of Dwayna is broken in ToA. I was wondering if this was foreshadowing to the loss of monks in Guild Wars 2. My other theory is that maybe Kormir becoming one of the Gods could have somehow stirred up trouble. Maybe the Gods had like a huge fight over it and only the professions still in GW2 came out victorious. I don’t know though, I’m just speculating. Anyhoo, again its a great podcast!

Hi, just a quick point about the guildwarswiki. I have always thought that other game wikis were of this standard, but having trawled through a few, it doesn’t appear to be the case. GW wiki is excellent and I do hope that when GW2 comes out, the standard is maintained, though GW1 having a predominately instanced world does marry well with a wiki structure.

Maybe Guildwars 4 will have a built in wiki 😀

  9. Aztex

My guess is that professions aren’t based on gods in GW2. The reason being that only humans worship the gods that we all know…….

Since you like necromancers so much maybe this will make you happy, sylvari necromancer in The Ghost of Ascalon

Yay my first comment on this podcast I think. I never played guild wars 1, and it feels like it might be a bit late for me to try and get anything out of it. Guild wars 2 is sounding like they might try something different or at least much improved over what others have tried. I just hope NCSoft does not do anything stupid to mess up ArenaNet… crap I hope I didn’t jinx it.

In case the contest is still going and no one has listed these yet…

Just because I would like to see one, an engineer or artificer or someone who focuses on mechanical/magical constructs(and explosives *evilgrin*).

the other races didn’t believe in dwana so all the monks ragequitted
