In spite of a relatively quiet update week for both Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, we managed to find plenty to discuss this week.

The annual Dragon Festival in Cantha begins next week, bringing with it our annual dose of red bean cakes, sugary blue drinks, and fabulously bad acting.  The newest Guild Wars 2 information brings us an ArenaNet blog entry about new alphabets and prompts a discussion on what this might mean for gameplay.  We continue our endless speculation about the next class reveal, and read lots of reader mail.  Thanks for that, you guys — keep ‘em coming!

Also, we try not to, but we still say “mechanic” a lot.

Look for the complete archive from the original GuildCast to be up soon.

In this 5th episode of GuildCast, Shawn and Rubi discuss the latest Q&A with lead designer Eric Flannum and designer Ben Miller regarding combat, skill chains, traits and more. Discussion also turns to the Guild Wars 1 War in Kryta updates and some speculation on where the White Mantle vs. Shining Blade thing is going.

We also read through several emails, including more than a few on GW2 profession speculation. Be sure to check out gw2fans.com where a budding community has already begun to grow. Also check out another Guild Wars podcast Relics of Orr featuring Lady Sinaea as a co-host!

As mentioned in the show, there are a few fun things we want to try for next episode (and beyond):

  • As a mini impromptu contest, we will be giving out a $25 Amazon.com gift certificate to the first person who correctly predicts the next revealed class.
  • Leave a comment to let us know your plans for your GW2 characters. What race/class/order combo will you pick? Why? Will there be a backstory? We would love to hear all about it and read a few on the next episode.
  • We would like to encourage listeners to send in intros for the show, like I did with the original GuildCast. So if that sounds like fun, send a small .mp3 file with something like “This is (name) and you’re listening to GuildCast!”. You may just hear yourself on the show soon!

GuildCast’s fourth episode features Shawn and Rubi talking all about the reveal of the warrior class and the introduction of traits in Guild Wars 2.  We also covered some great interviews with Eric Flannum, the Guild Wars 2 Lead Designer — one from Onlinewelten and one from Massively.  Listener Jose asked about forums to discuss guilds and alliances in Guild Wars 2, so we are officially directing him to Guild Wars 2 Guru and the Guild Wars Online forums.

We also talk about Fallen Earth and Lord of the Rings Online for some reason, our plans for PAX and Dragon*Con, and read listener email. Be sure to check our Relics of Orr for their upcoming GW2 podcast next week!

This week on GuildCast, Shawn and Rubi are joined by Ravious of Kill Ten Rats fame.  We talk about the house style adopted for Guild Wars 2 and the direction that the ArenaNet blog is taking for the coming months.  Between Ree Soesbee’s interview with Massively and Regina Buenaobra’s interview with Guild Wars Slovenija, we had quite a bit of ground to cover on how battles and personal instancing will be handled.  Finally, the big news: Guild Wars 2 will be playable on the convention circuit this year.
